Our extra-curricular highlights
Project Humble
Cessnock West Public School provides engaging, real-world experiences that challenge and excite students of all abilities, including high potential and gifted learners. Students actively contribute to real-world projects that make a lasting difference in their communities and ecosystems.
Moani
The Moani Aboriginal Education Team was formed in 2015.
Cessnock West PS was the first school in NSW to take the model of the Junior AECG (Aboriginal Education Consultative Group) from high schools and rework it to a Primary school format.
The word Moani means Kangaroo in the Awabakal language.
Our school's PBL mascot is a Kangaroo.
Debating and public speaking
Students can develop their thinking, communication and teamwork skills through debating and public speaking. They also have the chance to compete in local and state events.
Creative and performing arts
Our drama, music and art programs help students be creative and express themselves. They can join in concerts, art shows and drama activities.
Trips and excursions
Our students enjoy getting out of the classroom to explore, learn and try new things. These experiences help them grow, build confidence and see how their learning connects to the world.
Choir
Our inclusive choir performs songs at celebrations and events. Students practise with their peers during school time.
Robotics
Students engineer and operate machines that can semi-autonomously or autonomously perform tasks. Robotics education is a popular and innovative way for schools to teach core STEM skills. These skills include design, programming, problem solving and engineering.
Guitar
Cessnock West Public school has a long-established Guitar Tuition program. Lessons are catered to all levels from complete beginners upward. The program focuses on reading music for guitar, guitar basics, and enjoying a wide range of music.
Aerobics
The high intesity sport requires dedication, training during and after school, and performing in competitions. The sport teaches flexibility, coordination and stength. Cessnock West Public School has been very successful at competitions. We have been awarded first at State two times in a row, as well as fourth in the National competition against 13 teams.
Chaplaincy Program
A school chaplain's role is to support the emotional wellbeing of students by providing pastoral care services and strategies that support the emotional wellbeing of the broader school community regardless of faith or beliefs.
This year we are lucky enough to have two chaplains visit our school on a regular basis to support our students and families.
SRC and School Parliament
A Student Representative Council (SRC) is a group of students elected by their peers to represent all students within the school. SRC's work democratically to represent the School Parliament, run by Stage 3 students, in school decision-making and organise ways for students to participate in and enjoy school life.
