Cessnock West Opportunity Class
Cessnock West Public School is proud to offer an Opportunity Class (OC), providing a dynamic and enriched learning environment for academically gifted and high-potential students in Years 5 and 6. This NSW Department of Education initiative allows students to engage in challenging, fast-paced learning tailored to their abilities.
Having an Opportunity Class at Cessnock West is a significant benefit for our community. Families can access this specialised program locally, within a nurturing and supportive school environment, without the need to travel far. Our OC students excel in advanced academic programs while also enjoying the broader opportunities that make Cessnock West Public School unique, including sports, performing arts, leadership, and community involvement.
The Cessnock West OC is renowned for fostering curiosity, collaboration, and creativity. Students are encouraged to extend their learning, work together to solve complex problems, and build the confidence to succeed. Each year, our OC students present inspiring projects and achievements that highlight their personal growth and the vibrant learning culture of our school.
By offering an Opportunity Class, Cessnock West Public School demonstrates its commitment to meeting the needs of every learner—from those requiring additional support to those seeking enrichment at the highest levels. We are proud to provide this prestigious program locally, ensuring families in our region have access to outstanding gifted education.
To enrol, parents should note that the school offers both a non-selective stream and an Opportunity Class for high-potential and gifted students in Years 5 and 6. Applications for the OC are made when students are finishing Year 3 or starting Year 4, for placement in Year 5. The program runs for two years (Years 5 and 6), and applications for Year 6 placement only are not accepted.

What does learning in the OC Class look like?
High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Rich opportunities and activities
Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences
Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.
