Bro Speak and Sista Speak

Bro Speak and Sista Speak are programs for young Aboriginal boys and girls that runs throughout the year. It focuses on goal-setting, role models, navigating life choices and celebrating their culture and pride. Students explore Aboriginal histories, such as cultural games and Dreaming stories, and then discuss how these activities and lessons of the past inform their future. This helps students be strong in their Aboriginal identity and be smart in their approach to achieving their life goals.

The key pillars are 'strong in their hearts', 'smart in the way they make choices', 'skilled decision makers, 'leaders in school community' and 'connections to their culture'.

Moani Aboriginal Education Team (AET)

The Moani Aboriginal Education Team was formed in 2015.

Cessnock West PS was the first school in NSW to take the model of the Junior AECG (Aboriginal Education Consultative Group)  from high schools and rework it to a Primary school format.

The word Moani means Kangaroo in the Awabakal language.

Our school's PBL mascot is a Kangaroo.

In 2025, our school has an Aboriginal population of 118  students, which is 28% of our total school population. All Aboriginal students from Kindergarten to Year 6 are involved in the Moani team.
